Coupled modeling of thermics and hydrogeology with the Cast3M code: application to the Rainbow hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36A degrees 14'N) ArchiMer
Perez, Florian; Muegler, Claude; Jean-baptiste, Philippe; Charlou, Jean-luc.
We present a new numerical tool developed in the Cast3M software framework to model hydrothermal circulation. Thermodynamic properties of one-phase pure water are calculated from the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam formulation. This new numerical tool is validated on several test cases of convection in closed-top and open-top boxes. Simulations of hydrothermal circulation in a homogeneous-permeability porous medium also give results in good agreement with already published simulations. This new numerical tool is used to construct a geometric and physical conceptual model of the Rainbow vent site at 36A degrees 14(')N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Several configurations are discussed, showing that high temperatures and high mass...

Modeling of hydrogen production by serpentinization in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems: Application to the Rainbow field ArchiMer
Mugler, C.; Jean-baptiste, P.; Perez, Florian; Charlou, Jean-luc.
The production of hydrogen by serpentinization in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems is simulated by coupling thermodynamic and dynamic modeling in the framework of a thermo-hydraulic single-pass model where a high-temperature hydrothermal fluid moves preferentially through a main canal of high permeability. The alteration of ultramafic rocks is modeled with a first-order kinetic formulation, wherein the serpentinization rate coefficient, Kr, takes the form: Kr = A exp(−α(T − T0)2). In this formulation, α determines the temperature range of the reaction and T0 is the temperature at which the serpentinization rate reaches its maximum. This model is applied to the Rainbow hydrothermal system, which is situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and characterized...

Subseafloor archaeal communities: from the surface to a deep hot biosphere? ArchiMer
Roussel, Erwan.
The sub-seafloor biosphere may contain two thirds of Earth's total prokaryotic biomass. The large and active microbial populations buried in the sub-seafloor play a key role in global biogeochemical cycles. However, little is known about these prokaryotic communities. The depth limit of this sub-seafloor biosphere is still unreached, and elevated temperatures as well as insufficient energy sources are the likely factors limiting life at depth. Interestingly, archaeal communities with unknown physiologies and no cultured relatives seem to have a key role in deep marine sediments and hydrothermal ecosystems. As most deep biosphere microorganisms detected so far have been extremely resistant to cultivation, molecular approaches remain to date the most...

Sulfur and strontium isotopic study of epithermal mineralization: A case study from the SE Afar Rift, Djibouti ArchiMer
Moussa, N.; Rouxel, Olivier; Grassineau, N. V.; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Nonnotte, P.; Fouquet, Yves; Le Gall, B..
Epithermal mineralization was recently described in synrift volcanic rocks from the SE Afar Rift in Djibouti. To infer fluid sources in this system, coupled sulfur and strontium isotopic analyses were performed on mineralized samples from hydrothermal veins and stockwork zones. Mineralization includes gypsum and chalcedony, and/or quartz ± carbonate containing gold and sulfides. Sulfur isotopic compositions of sulfides and sulfates were determined using Multicollector-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC ICPMS); Laser Ablation MC ICPMS; and Continuous Flow Elemental Analyzer-Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry while strontium isotopes were determined by Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) methods. Sulfur isotopic composition of sulfides...
